The military community has limited exposure to yoga, but all of this is changing. Several non-profits including the Veterans Yoga Project and the Baptiste Foundation are actively pursuing military yoga programs from all available angles. While all of this may seem new, practicing yoga has been used by warriors for centuries to build strength and resilience.

Resilience by definition is the capacity to recover. It is a word that we need to put our attention on as a community. The most current statistics from the United States Department of Veteran Affairs reports 20 veteran suicide deaths a DAY. That is 20 people a day that are unable to recover from the visible and invisible wounds of war. Yoga has the capacity to change that number.

The practice of yoga does not need to be re-worked or specifically designed to benefit a warrior. It works as-is. In Baptiste Yoga we use 3 practices including asana (physical practice), meditation, and inquiry to get powerful life changing results.

How can you make a difference? If you are a veteran/active duty military member reading this article, show up! Brave a yoga class, you won’t regret it! If you are someone with an existing yoga practice, share it! Invite, invite, invite. You may just save a life.
